Ultrasound in Jersey City: Diagnostic Imaging Without Radiation

Jersey City Imaging Center offers a full range of ultrasound services for abdominal, pelvic, thyroid, vascular, OB, and other diagnostic needs. No radiation, no contrast, walk-ins welcome, and all major insurance plans accepted, including Medicare and Medicaid.

What Is an Ultrasound?

An ultrasound, also called a sonogram, is a diagnostic imaging test that uses high-frequency sound waves to create real-time images of the inside of your body. Unlike X-ray and CT, ultrasound uses no radiation, which makes it one of the safest imaging tests available. It is the preferred imaging method for pregnant patients, children, and anyone who needs imaging without radiation exposure.

Ultrasound is excellent for visualizing soft tissues, organs, blood vessels, and developing pregnancies. It is widely used to evaluate the abdomen, pelvis, thyroid, breasts, blood vessels, and many other body areas. The imaging is done in real time, which means your sonographer can see how your organs and blood flow are working as the scan happens.

Your ultrasound is interpreted by a board-certified radiologist who sends a formal written report to you and your referring physician within 2 to 3 business days.

TYPES OF ULTRASOUND WE OFFER

Ultrasound is one of the most versatile imaging tests in medicine, and Jersey City Imaging Center offers the full range. The most common ultrasound exams we perform include:

Abdominal Ultrasound

Used to image the liver, gallbladder, pancreas, kidneys, spleen, and abdominal aorta. Common reasons include unexplained abdominal pain, suspected gallstones, and evaluation of the liver or kidneys.

Pelvic Ultrasound

Used to evaluate the uterus, ovaries, bladder, and other pelvic organs. Common reasons include pelvic pain, abnormal bleeding, fibroid evaluation, and ovarian cyst follow-up. Both abdominal and transvaginal pelvic approaches are available depending on what your physician ordered.

Thyroid Ultrasound

Used to evaluate the thyroid gland for nodules, cysts, and other concerns. Often ordered when a physician feels a lump during a physical exam or when blood tests suggest thyroid issues.

Vascular Ultrasound

Used to evaluate blood flow through arteries and veins. Includes carotid artery studies (to check for stroke risk), venous studies of the legs (to check for blood clots), and arterial studies of the arms and legs.

OB Ultrasound (2D)

Used during pregnancy to evaluate the developing fetus, check fetal growth, confirm dating, and identify any concerns. We perform standard 2D diagnostic OB ultrasound as ordered by your obstetrician or healthcare provider.

Soft Tissue Ultrasound

Used to evaluate lumps, cysts, hernias, and other soft tissue concerns anywhere on the body.

Musculoskeletal Ultrasound

Used to evaluate muscles, tendons, and joints. Often ordered for sports injuries, tendon tears, and joint inflammation.

Renal Ultrasound

Used to evaluate the kidneys, bladder, and surrounding structures. Common reasons include kidney stones, urinary tract concerns, and kidney function evaluation.

Scrotal Ultrasound

Used to evaluate testicular pain, lumps, or swelling.

When Your Doctor May Order an Ultrasound

Ultrasound is often the first imaging test ordered for many concerns, especially when a doctor wants imaging without radiation. Common reasons your physician may order an ultrasound include:

If you have a prescription for an ultrasound from any licensed physician, you can schedule your scan at Jersey City Imaging Center. We accept prescriptions from primary care doctors, OB-GYNs, urgent care providers, specialists, chiropractors, physical therapists, and other licensed prescribers.

What to Expect During Your Ultrasound

Ultrasound is a painless, comfortable exam. Here is what happens from check-in to checkout.

Check-in

When you arrive, our front desk verifies your identity, your prescription, and your insurance information. If you uploaded your insurance through your booking confirmation email, this step is fast.

Pre-scan preparation

Depending on the type of ultrasound, you may be asked to change into a hospital gown. For most abdominal and pelvic ultrasounds, you will only need to expose the area being scanned. Your sonographer makes sure you are comfortable and your privacy is respected throughout.

The scan itself

Your sonographer applies a small amount of warm gel to your skin in the area being imaged. The gel helps the ultrasound probe make clear contact with your skin. The sonographer then moves the probe across the area, capturing real-time images on a screen. You may be asked to take a deep breath, hold still, or change positions briefly.

Comfort

Ultrasound is painless. The probe pressure is gentle, and the gel is warmed for your comfort. Some exams, such as transvaginal pelvic ultrasound, involve internal positioning, which your sonographer explains in advance and performs with care.

Duration

Most ultrasounds take 20 to 45 minutes from check-in to checkout, depending on the body region being scanned and how detailed the exam is.

After the scan

You can wipe the gel off, get dressed, and leave immediately. There is no recovery time and no medical restrictions afterward.

Receiving your results

A board-certified radiologist reviews your images and prepares a formal written report. Your report is sent to you and your referring physician within 2 to 3 business days.

How to Prepare for Your Ultrasound

Preparation depends on the type of ultrasound your doctor ordered. Here are the most common prep guidelines.

Abdominal ultrasound

Most abdominal ultrasounds require fasting for 6 to 8 hours before the scan. Drinking small amounts of water is usually fine, but avoid food, gum, and coffee during the fasting period.

Pelvic ultrasound

Some pelvic ultrasounds require a full bladder for the scan. If your scan requires a full bladder, you will be asked to drink several glasses of water about an hour before your appointment and avoid using the restroom until after the scan.

Renal or kidney ultrasound

Often requires a full bladder, similar to pelvic ultrasound.

Thyroid, vascular, soft tissue, and musculoskeletal ultrasound

No special preparation is typically required.

OB ultrasound

Preparation depends on the stage of pregnancy and what your physician ordered. Our team gives you specific instructions when you book.

The day of your scan

Take your regular medications unless your physician told you otherwise. Wear comfortable, loose-fitting clothing that allows easy access to the area being scanned.

Your prescription, a valid photo ID, your insurance card, and any prior imaging or related medical records if available.
