What Is an X-Ray?

An X-ray is the most common and accessible diagnostic imaging test in medicine. It uses a small dose of radiation to create images of the inside of your body, particularly bones, joints, and the chest. X-ray has been the foundation of medical imaging for over a century because it is fast, widely available, and remarkably effective for the conditions it is designed to evaluate.

X-rays are most often used to check for broken bones, evaluate joint problems, screen for lung conditions like pneumonia, and identify foreign objects in the body. They are typically the first imaging test ordered when a doctor needs a quick look at a specific area.

Your X-ray is interpreted by a board-certified radiologist who sends a formal written report to you and your referring physician within 24 hours.

Our Digital X-Ray

Jersey City Imaging Center uses modern digital X-ray technology. Digital X-ray has several real advantages over older film-based systems.

Lower radiation

Digital X-ray uses significantly less radiation than traditional film X-ray to capture the same diagnostic image, making it safer for patients who need imaging.

Faster results

Digital images are available immediately after the scan, which means your radiologist can interpret them quickly and your report is typically delivered within 24 hours.

Better image quality

Digital X-rays produce sharper, clearer images that can be enhanced and adjusted by the radiologist to highlight specific areas of concern.

Easier sharing

Your digital X-ray images can be sent electronically to any specialist or physician you choose, with no delays for film transfer.

Every X-ray at JCIC includes:

Body Parts We Image with X-Ray

X-ray is one of the most versatile tools in diagnostic imaging. The most common X-rays we perform include:

Chest X-Ray

Used to evaluate the lungs, heart, and chest wall. Common reasons include cough, shortness of breath, suspected pneumonia, chest pain, and pre-surgical clearance.

Bone and Joint X-Ray

The most common X-ray exam. Used to check for fractures, dislocations, arthritis, joint damage, and bone abnormalities. We routinely image the hand, wrist, elbow, shoulder, hip, knee, ankle, and foot.

Spine X-Ray

Cervical (neck), thoracic (mid back), and lumbar (lower back) spine X-rays. Used to evaluate back pain, neck pain, scoliosis, and spinal alignment.

Abdominal X-Ray

Used to evaluate abdominal pain, suspected bowel obstruction, kidney stones, and other digestive concerns.

Skull and Facial X-Ray

Used for sinus problems, facial trauma, and certain dental and jaw concerns.

Pelvic X-Ray

Used to evaluate the pelvis, hip joints, and surrounding structures, often after a fall or injury.

Knee X-Ray

A common standalone exam for knee pain, suspected fractures, and arthritis evaluation.

When Your Doctor May Order an X-Ray

X-ray is often the first imaging test your doctor orders for a wide range of concerns, including:

If you have a prescription for an X-ray from any licensed physician, you can come in to Jersey City Imaging Center. We accept prescriptions from primary care doctors, urgent care providers, specialists, chiropractors, physical therapists, and other licensed prescribers.

What to Expect During Your X-Ray

X-ray is the fastest imaging exam at Jersey City Imaging Center. Most patients are in and out within 10 to 20 minutes. Here is what happens.

Check-in

When you arrive, our front desk verifies your identity, your prescription, and your insurance information. If you uploaded your insurance through your booking confirmation email, this step is fast.

Pre-scan preparation

Depending on the body part being imaged, you may be asked to change into a hospital gown and remove jewelry, glasses, and clothing with metal zippers, snaps, or buttons. For some X-rays, like a finger or wrist, you can stay fully dressed.

The X-ray itself

A certified technologist positions you carefully so the body part being imaged is in the right alignment. You will be asked to hold still for a few seconds, and sometimes to hold your breath, while the X-ray is taken. Most exams require 1 to 4 images. The actual exposure time is less than a second per image.

No discomfort

The X-ray dose used in DEXA is extremely low, far lower than a standard chest X-ray and a small fraction of the natural background radiation you receive from one day of normal life.

After the scan

You can leave immediately and resume your normal day. There is no recovery time, no medical restrictions, and no aftercare required.

Receiving your results

A board-certified radiologist reviews your X-ray and prepares a formal written report. Your report is sent to you and your referring physician within 24 hours.

How to Prepare for Your X-Ray

X-ray is one of the easiest scans to prepare for. In most cases, no special preparation is needed.

The day of your scan

Eat normally, take your regular medications, and wear comfortable clothing without metal zippers, buttons, or snaps in the area being imaged. For chest X-rays, women may be asked to remove necklaces and bras.

What to bring

Your prescription, a valid photo ID, your insurance card, and any prior imaging records if available.

If you may be pregnant

Tell our team before your X-ray. While the radiation dose used in modern digital X-ray is very low, we always confirm safety for pregnant or potentially pregnant patients before proceeding. In some cases, your physician may recommend an alternative test or a shielded approach.
