Jersey City Imaging Center offers CT scans for the head, chest, abdomen, pelvis, and more. Most scans are completed in 10 to 30 minutes, walk-ins are welcome, and we accept all major insurance plans, including Medicare and Medicaid.
A CT scan, short for Computed Tomography, is a diagnostic imaging test that uses X-rays and advanced computer processing to create detailed cross-sectional images of the inside of your body. CT is significantly faster than MRI and provides exceptional detail of bones, blood vessels, soft tissues, and internal organs.
CT scans are often the first choice for emergency-related imaging, such as suspected internal injury after an accident, but they are also widely used for routine diagnostic needs like evaluating chronic pain, screening for tumors, identifying kidney stones, and assessing chest and abdominal conditions.
Your scan is interpreted by a board-certified radiologist who sends a formal written report to you and your referring physician within 2 to 3 business days.
Jersey City Imaging Center uses modern CT scanning technology designed to produce high-quality images quickly and at the lowest reasonable radiation dose for each patient. Our team follows the principle of using only as much radiation as needed to capture a clear, diagnostic image.
Every CT scan at JCIC includes:
The 1.5T (Tesla) magnet is the diagnostic standard for medical imaging. It produces clear, high-quality images for the vast majority of clinical needs, from neurological scans to musculoskeletal imaging to abdominal studies. Most MRI scans worldwide are performed on 1.5T machines.
Traditional closed MRI machines have a narrow tube that some patients find tight or uncomfortable, especially patients with claustrophobia or those who are larger in size. Our wide-bore design is significantly more open, giving you more space, more light, and a far more comfortable experience.
Our MRI accommodates most body sizes comfortably. If you have felt anxious or constrained in a standard MRI before, you will likely find our wide-bore experience much easier.
Every scan is performed by a certified imaging technologist and interpreted by a board-certified radiologist.
CT is one of the most versatile imaging tools available. The most common CT scans we perform include:
Used to evaluate headaches, suspected stroke, head injuries, sinus problems, and other neurological concerns. CT is often the first choice for emergency-related head imaging because it is fast.
Used to image the lungs, heart, and chest wall. Common reasons include unexplained cough, chest pain, suspected pneumonia, or follow-up of a finding on a chest X-ray.
Used to evaluate abdominal pain, suspected appendicitis, kidney stones, liver and pancreas conditions, and digestive system concerns.
Often combined with abdomen CT to evaluate the lower abdomen, bladder, reproductive organs, and surrounding structures. Common for unexplained pelvic pain and follow-up imaging.
Used to evaluate the cervical, thoracic, or lumbar spine, often when MRI is not appropriate or as a complement to other imaging.
Used to evaluate chronic sinus infections, sinus pain, and structural concerns before sinus surgery.
Used for complex fractures, joint injuries, and bone-related concerns when X-ray does not provide enough detail.
CT is one of the most common imaging tests ordered by physicians. Your doctor may order a CT scan for many reasons, including:
If you have a prescription for a CT scan from any licensed physician, you can schedule your scan at Jersey City Imaging Center. We accept prescriptions from primary care doctors, urgent care providers, specialists, and other licensed prescribers.
If you have never had a CT scan before, the process is straightforward and quick. Here is what happens from check-in to checkout.
When you arrive, our front desk verifies your identity, your prescription, and your insurance information. If you uploaded your insurance through your booking confirmation email, this step is fast.
Depending on the body part being scanned, you may be asked to change into a hospital gown and remove jewelry, glasses, and clothing with metal zippers or snaps. Lockers are provided for your belongings.
Some CT scans require contrast dye to make certain tissues, blood vessels, or organs more visible. Contrast may be given by mouth (oral), through an IV, or both, depending on what your doctor ordered. If your scan requires contrast, our team explains what to expect and reviews your medical history first to make sure it is safe for you.
You lie on a padded table that slides through a large ring-shaped opening. You do not go inside a tunnel. The scan itself usually takes only a few minutes, though the entire visit including check-in and prep typically lasts 10 to 30 minutes. The scanner makes some humming and clicking sounds, but it is much quieter than an MRI. You will be asked to hold still and possibly hold your breath for short periods.
You can leave immediately and resume your normal day in most cases. If you received contrast, our team gives you specific aftercare instructions, which usually include drinking extra water to help your body process the contrast.
A board-certified radiologist reviews your images and prepares a formal written report. Your report is sent to you and your referring physician within 2 to 3 business days.
CT preparation depends on what is being scanned and whether contrast is required. Here are the general guidelines.
Confirm your appointment is on your calendar and that your insurance information has been uploaded through your booking confirmation email. If your physician ordered any specific prep instructions, follow those.
Your physician or our team gives you specific instructions if your scan requires contrast. This often includes fasting for 4 to 6 hours before the scan. If no special instructions were given, eat normally.
Take your regular medications unless your physician told you otherwise. Wear comfortable clothing without metal zippers, buttons, or snaps. Leave jewelry and metal accessories at home, or be prepared to remove them at check-in.
Your prescription, a valid photo ID, your insurance card, a list of current medications, and any prior imaging or related medical records if available.
Tell us if you are pregnant or might be pregnant, if you have kidney problems or diabetes, if you have a history of allergic reactions to contrast dye or iodine, or if you are taking metformin or any other medications that may interact with contrast.
Walk-ins are welcome at Jersey City Imaging Center during regular hours, Monday through Friday from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM. If you have a prescription and want to come in without an appointment, you are welcome to do so. We do our best to accommodate walk-ins as scheduling allows.
For the fastest service, especially if your scan requires contrast, call ahead at (551) 353-9911 to confirm availability and prep instructions before you arrive.
Jersey City Imaging Center accepts all major insurance plans for CT scans, including Medicare and Medicaid. Most insured patients pay only their plan’s standard co-pay or coinsurance, which we verify before your appointment.
We also welcome self-pay patients with a prescription. Self-pay quotes are provided in writing within one business day of request, with no facility fees and no hidden charges.
Most CT scans at JCIC take between 10 and 30 minutes from check-in to checkout. The scan itself often lasts only a few minutes, but check-in, preparation, and any contrast administration add to the total visit time. Our team gives you an estimated duration when you book.
Yes. New Jersey law requires a prescription from a licensed physician for diagnostic imaging, including CT. The prescription can come from any licensed provider, including primary care doctors, urgent care, specialists, chiropractors, physical therapists, and nurse practitioners with prescribing authority. You do not need to be referred from a specific network.
Yes. CT uses X-rays, which is a form of radiation, but the dose is carefully controlled and the diagnostic benefits typically outweigh the small risk for most patients. Our team follows the principle of using only as much radiation as needed for a clear image. If you have concerns about radiation exposure, talk with your physician about whether CT is the right test for you.
CT and MRI are both detailed imaging tests, but they work differently and are best at different things. CT uses X-rays and is faster, often completed in just a few minutes. CT is excellent for bones, blood vessels, internal injury, and lung imaging. MRI uses magnets and radio waves (no radiation) and provides more detail for soft tissues like the brain, spinal cord, muscles, and ligaments. Your physician chooses the test based on what they need to see.
It depends on what your physician ordered and what part of your body is being imaged. Some scans require contrast to clearly visualize blood vessels, organs, or specific tissues. Other scans do not need contrast at all. If your scan requires contrast, our team explains what to expect and reviews your medical history first to make sure it is safe for you.
Your CT scan is interpreted by a board-certified radiologist who sends a formal written report to you and your referring physician within 2 to 3 business days. We can send results to any provider you choose, including specialists or new physicians.
