Jersey City Imaging Center offers detailed knee MRI scans for sports injuries, ligament and meniscus tears, arthritis, and chronic knee pain. Our wide-bore 1.5T MRI is comfortable for most patients, and we accept all major insurance plans, including Medicare and Medicaid.
A knee MRI is the most detailed imaging test available for the knee. It uses a strong magnetic field and radio waves, with no radiation, to produce clear images of every structure inside and around the knee joint.
A knee MRI shows:
X-rays show the bones of the knee but cannot show ligaments, cartilage, or soft tissues. CT shows bones and some soft tissue, but MRI is the gold standard for diagnosing the soft tissue causes of knee pain. If your physician suspects a torn ligament, meniscus injury, or any condition involving the cartilage, MRI is the test that gives them the most complete picture.
Your scan is interpreted by a board-certified radiologist who sends a formal written report to you and your referring physician within 2 to 3 business days.
Knee MRI is used to diagnose a wide range of injuries and conditions. The most common include:
A tear of the anterior cruciate ligament, one of the most common serious knee injuries, especially among athletes. ACL tears typically happen during sudden stops, pivots, or awkward landings. MRI clearly shows whether the ACL is partially torn, fully torn, or intact.
A tear in one of the C-shaped cartilage pads that cushion the knee joint. Common causes include sports injuries, awkward twisting, and degenerative changes from aging. MRI shows the location, size, and pattern of the tear, which helps guide treatment decisions.
Tears of the medial collateral ligament or lateral collateral ligament, often caused by direct blows to the side of the knee. MRI confirms the tear and shows whether other knee structures are also involved.
A tear of the posterior cruciate ligament, less common than ACL tears but often seen after motor vehicle accidents or falls onto a bent knee.
Damage to the smooth cartilage that lines the bones of the knee joint. MRI is one of the few tests that can clearly show cartilage damage, which is important for both treatment planning and tracking progression.
While X-ray shows bone changes from arthritis well, MRI provides a more complete picture by also showing cartilage loss, joint inflammation, and soft tissue involvement.
Tears or inflammation of the major tendons around the knee. MRI clearly shows the extent of any tear and helps guide treatment.
Inflammation of the fluid-filled sacs around the knee. MRI shows the inflammation and any related fluid buildup.
Subtle injuries to the bones of the knee that may not show up on X-ray. MRI is excellent at detecting these.
Both benign cysts (such as Baker's cysts) and tumors of the knee are clearly visible on MRI.
Your physician may order a knee MRI for many reasons, including:
If you have a prescription for a knee MRI from any licensed physician, you can schedule your scan at Jersey City Imaging Center. We accept prescriptions from primary care doctors, orthopedists, sports medicine physicians, urgent care providers, chiropractors, physical therapists, and other licensed prescribers.
A knee MRI is straightforward and well-tolerated by most patients. Here is what happens.

Our front desk verifies your identity, your prescription, and your insurance information. If you uploaded your insurance through your booking confirmation email, this step is fast.
You will be asked to change into a hospital gown and remove all metal items, including jewelry, watches, hairpins, glasses, hearing aids, and clothing with metal zippers or snaps. Lockers are provided for your belongings.
Our technologist confirms MRI is safe for you. Tell us about any metal implants, pacemakers, aneurysm clips, or other devices in your body.
You will lie flat on a padded table with the knee being scanned positioned in a special MRI coil that wraps around the joint. The coil helps capture sharper images of the knee. Your leg is supported with cushioning to keep it comfortable and still during the scan.
The scan typically takes 30 to 60 minutes depending on the body part being imaged and the specific protocol your doctor ordered. The machine makes loud knocking and humming sounds during the scan, and we provide ear protection. You can talk to the technologist at any time through a two-way intercom, and you will hold a call button in case you need to pause.
For knee MRI, holding the leg still is important for clear images. Our team gives you specific instructions and supports the leg with positioning aids.
You can leave immediately and resume your normal day. There is no recovery time, no sedation, and no medical restrictions afterward.
A board-certified radiologist reviews your images and prepares a formal written report. Your report is sent to you and your referring physician within 2 to 3 business days.
Many patients booking a knee MRI are dealing with active pain, swelling, or limited mobility. Comfort matters, and here is how we make the experience easier.
Our wide-bore MRI is significantly more open than traditional closed MRI machines. For knee scans, only your lower body needs to be inside the scanner, so most patients have their head and chest in the open air during the entire scan.
Our team uses pillows and positioning aids to keep you comfortable during the scan. If your knee is painful in certain positions, tell us before we begin so we can adjust.
You hold a call button throughout the scan and can speak to the technologist at any time. If you need to pause or come out, we stop.
Most knee MRI patients do not need sedation, since the scan only involves the lower body and the wide-bore design is comfortable. For patients with severe claustrophobia, light sedation can be arranged in advance through your prescribing physician.
Knee MRI requires very little preparation. Here is what to do before your scan.
Confirm your appointment is on your calendar and that your insurance information has been uploaded through your booking confirmation email.
Eat normally and take your regular medications unless your physician told you otherwise. Wear comfortable clothing without metal zippers, buttons, or snaps. Loose-fitting pants or shorts are ideal since your knee will be the focus of the scan. Leave jewelry, watches, and metal accessories at home, or be prepared to remove them at check-in.
Your prescription, a valid photo ID, your insurance card, a list of current medications, and any prior imaging or related medical records if available.
Tell us if you have any metal implants in or near your knee, including surgical hardware from a prior knee surgery. Also let us know about any pacemaker, aneurysm clip, surgical staples, or other devices in your body. If you are pregnant, breastfeeding, or have severe claustrophobia, mention that as well. If your knee is in active pain, tell us so we can help you get into position comfortably.
Jersey City Imaging Center accepts all major insurance plans for knee MRI, including Medicare and Medicaid. Most insured patients pay only their plan’s standard co-pay or coinsurance, which we verify before your appointment.
We also welcome self-pay patients with a prescription. Self-pay quotes are provided in writing within one business day of request, with no facility fees and no hidden charges.
Most knee MRIs at JCIC take between 30 and 60 minutes from check-in to checkout, depending on the specific protocol your doctor ordered. The scan itself is shorter than a spine or full body MRI. Our team gives you an estimated duration when you book.

For knee MRI, only your lower body needs to be inside the scanner. Most patients have their head and chest in the open air during the entire scan, which makes the experience much more comfortable than a head or chest MRI. Our wide-bore design adds extra space for any patient who feels anxious in tight places.
No. MRI itself is painless. You will lie still on a padded table with your knee supported by cushioning. If your knee is in active pain when you arrive, tell our team so we can help you get into position as comfortably as possible.
Most modern surgical hardware (screws, plates, replacement implants) is MRI-safe, but it is important to tell our team about any hardware before your scan. Our technologist will confirm safety and adjust the scan protocol if needed. Bring records or details about the type of hardware if you have them.
